چکیده

The idea that language history is best visualized by a branching tree has been controversially discussed in the linguistic world andmany alternative theories have been proposed. The reluctance of many scholars to accept the tree as the natural metaphor for language history was due to conflicting signals in linguistic data: many resemblances would simply not point to a unique tree. Despite these observations, the majority of automatic approaches applied to language data has been based on the tree model, * First published in SørenWichmann and Jeff Good (eds.). 2014.Quantifying LanguageDynamics: On the Cutting Edge of Areal and Phylogenetic Linguistics, 125–154. Leiden: Brill. using phylogenetic networks to model chinese dialect history 223 Language Dynamics and Change 4 (2014) 222–252 while network approaches have rarely been applied. Due to the specific sociolinguistic situation in China, where very divergent varieties have been developing under the roof of a common culture and writing system, the history of the Chinese dialects is complex and intertwined. They are therefore a good test case for methods which no longer take the family tree as their primary model. Here we use a network approach to study the lexical history of 40 Chinese dialects. In contrast to previous approaches, our method is character-based and captures both vertical and horizontal aspects of language history. According to our results, themajority of characters in our data (about 54%) cannot be readily explained with the help of a given tree model. The borrowing events inferred by our method do not only reflect general uncertainties of Chinese dialect classification, they also reveal the strong influence of the standard language on Chinese dialect history.

Phonemic evidence reveals interwoven evolution of Chinese dialects

Han Chinese experienced substantial population migrations and admixture in history, yet little is known about the evolutionary process of Chinese dialects. Here, we used phylogenetic approaches and admixture inference to explicitly decompose the underlying structure of the diversity of Chinese dialects, based on the total phoneme inventories of 140 dialect samples from seven traditional dialect...

Dialect adaptation for Mandarin Chinese speech recognition

Many local or regional dialects exist in China. In case of mismatch between the dialect used to train the system and the dialect of the user, poor recognition accuracy is obtained. In this paper, we therefore investigate the development of a dialectspecific recognition system in Mandarin Chinese using standard adaptation techniques: a speaker-independent (SI) model trained on a source dialect (...

Improving Phylogeny-Based Network Approaches to Investigate the History of the Chinese Dialects1

Phylogeny-based network approaches are a powerful tool to study language history. Based on a reference tree, they infer the minimal amount of transfer events that is needed to explain the patterning of cognate sets observed in contemporary languages. Since these approaches handle both vertical and lateral aspects of language history, they seem perfectly adequate to study Chinese dialect history...

Chinese dialect identification using an acoustic-phonotactic model

In this paper we develop hidden Markov model (HMM) based approaches to identify Chinese dialects spoken in Taiwan. This task can be aided by exploiting various characteristic features of Chinese spoken languages. The baseline system performs phonotactic analysis after the speech utterance is tokenized into a sequence of five broad phonetic classes. The sequential statistics of the resulting sym...

Automatic initial/final generation for dialectal Chinese speech recognition

Phonetic differences always exist between any Chinese dialect and standard Chinese (Putonghua). In this paper, a method, named automatic dialect-specific Initial/Final (IF) generation, is proposed to deal with the issue of phonemic difference which can automatically produce the dialect-specific units based on model distance measure. A dialect-specific decision tree regrowing method is also prop...
